You could say that the Spain square is one of the most important squares of Rome. It is the favorite place for tourists and Romans to spend the day strolling or shopping, as the streets near the square are crowded with shops and restaurants.

What stands out is the large staircase of 135 steps that joins the Spanish Embassy (next to the Holy See) with the Church of Trinità dei Monti since 1725. During spring and summer the flight of stairs is decorated with numerous flowers of all kinds.

At the foot of the staircase is the Fontana della Barcaccia, commissioned to Bernini by Pope Urban VIII. The design, a small boat, was inspired by a ship that is said that after the flood of the River Tiber, was stranded here after the water diminished.

It is always surrounded by tourists watching the beautiful fountain of crystalline waters.
At the top is the Gothic-Renaissance Church of Trinità dei Monti, begun in 1502 on the orders of the French King Louis XII. In front you can see an obelisk engraved with the same hieroglyphics as the obelisk of the Plaza de Popolo.
