Rome timetable

Try to leave the hotel no later than 8.30.

The following general guidelines on Rome schedules will help you to plan your trip better:

  • Some of the main monuments (Coliseum, Roman Forum, Termas de Caracalla ...) open at around 8.30-9.00 and close early in the afternoon, especially in winter, as the closure is associated with the sunset : In winter at 16.30 and in summer at 19.15.
  • Public museums, however, also open in the first hour (9.00 or something earlier) but last longer (until 19.30-20.00), making it a good choice for the last hour of the day.
  • The 4 major basilicas (S.Pedro, S.Maria, Lateran and S.Pablo) open very early (7.00) and close at mid afternoon (between 6.00 pm and 7.00 pm). They do not close at midday.
  • The great majority of Roman churches do close at noon, from 12.30 to 15.00 or 15.30. Keep in mind, especially, if you are going to see the ones that are farther from the center, so as not to make the journey in vain.

Watch out for Sundays and Mondays

Almost all churches in Rome have worship, and some of them can not be visited during liturgical celebrations. During the week, small churches tend to have a mass first thing in the day and another to last, so that they hardly interfere with the tourism. But on Sundays Masses are more frequent. So, if you can, plan other visits for Sundays.

On the other hand, Monday is the closing day of the city's public museums.
